There are more Chinese cars in Russia than French ones

An analytical article about how the fleet of Chinese passenger cars in Russia has quantitatively surpassed French brands, and what this says about structural changes in the market.

When statistics change the picture of the market

The fact that there are more Chinese passenger cars in the Russian fleet than French ones is symbolic in itself. Ten years ago, such a balance of power seemed unlikely: French brands were a familiar part of the street landscape, while Chinese brands remained niche. Now the numerical superiority of Chinese cars reflects not only the growth of their supplies, but also the general redistribution of forces in the auto industry under the pressure of geopolitics and economics.

It is also important that we are not talking about sales statistics for one year, but about the fleet - the totality of actually used cars. This means that Chinese brands have taken hold not as a temporary blip, but as an enduring phenomenon. Every new car sold remains on the road for years, and the longer this trend continues, the more noticeable the fleet structure, service center habits and customer expectations change.

How Chinese brands beat out French ones

The path to the current result consisted of several stages. At first, Chinese manufacturers occupied the lower price segment, offering simple and affordable models, often in basic configurations, but with an attractive price tag. Then a qualitative leap began: modern crossovers, sedans and liftbacks appeared with modern designs, rich options and advanced electronics. Against this background, French brands, on the contrary, gradually reduced their model lines and presence in the market.

The events of recent years have played a decisive role: the departure or freezing of the activities of many European brands, the rupture of logistics chains, rising import prices and difficulties with the supply of original spare parts. Chinese companies quickly filled the vacated niches - primarily in the segment of mass crossovers and family cars. For the buyer, the choice has become pragmatic: instead of a conventional French hatchback or crossover, he is greeted in the cabin with a Chinese alternative with a large screen, a rich base and a warranty.

The role of Chinese passenger cars in the new reality

Today, Chinese passenger cars in Russia are not only a “cheap replacement”, but increasingly the main choice. Brands are building complete lines: from compact city models to large crossovers and minivans, including hybrids and electric vehicles. This coverage of segments allows them to work with the first car in the family, with an upgrade to a more status model, and with a corporate fleet. French brands, on the contrary, for the most part remained in the “heritage” status - the park is still large, but there is almost no growth.

The service infrastructure is also gradually being rebuilt. Independent service stations are mastering the repair and maintenance of Chinese cars, spare parts stockpiles are appearing, and a secondary market for components and assemblies is being formed. If earlier there was a risk of “how will I service it later?” was a serious barrier, now it is decreasing, and along with it, confidence in Chinese manufacturers is growing as a long-term choice, and not a temporary measure.

Why French cars lost ground

French cars in Russia have always had their audience: for their soft suspension, comfortable interiors and original design, they were appreciated by those who were looking for something different from the mass-produced German and Japanese models. However, such individuality in conditions of instability also became a weakness. A limited model range, not always obvious liquidity in the secondary market and higher sensitivity to changes in import policy have made owning a French car less predictable.

Chinese brands, on the contrary, have relied on mass formats and quick adaptation. Where a French manufacturer removed a model or left the market, the Chinese factory immediately introduced several alternatives in size and price. As a result, the French car fleet is naturally “aging” and shrinking as people retire, while the Chinese car fleet is actively growing, based on fresh sales and expanding presence in the regions.

What does this mean for the future of the Russian vehicle fleet

The fact that there are more Chinese cars in Russia than French ones is just one of the markers of profound changes. In the coming years, the gap is likely to only widen: the French car fleet will naturally shrink, while Chinese brands will continue to increase sales, localization of production and model lines. This will change both the appearance of the streets and the structure of the secondary market, where Chinese passenger cars will occupy an increasingly significant share.

For the car owner, this means a shift in the starting point: if previously the comparison was between “Europeans” and “Japanese”, now more and more often the choice is made between different Chinese brands and individual remaining players. The winner is the one who offers the best balance of price, equipment, service and residual value. And today’s statistics on the number of cars only confirms that the Chinese auto industry has already become one of the pillars of the Russian vehicle fleet, and not a temporary replacement for periods of turbulence.
