The most affordable GAC crossover in Russia will be updated in China: first photos

The updated GAC GS4 was shown in the first photos: the crossover received a fresh design, retained the gasoline engine and may remain affordable.

Updating the key model

In China, the updated crossover GAC GS4 (Trumpchi GS4), which is one of the most important models of the brand, has been declassified. It is the pre-reform version that today remains the most affordable GAC crossover on the Russian market, so the update is also of interest from the point of view of the possible appearance of a new product in Russia.

According to preliminary data, the starting price of the model in China will be about 100 thousand yuan, which is equivalent to approximately one million rubles. The main competitor is called Geely Boyue, known in Russia under the name Cityray.

Design in the spirit of electric vehicles

Judging by the first photos, the updated GS4 has received a noticeably redesigned appearance. The crossover is made in the style of modern electric GAC models, in particular it resembles the Aion i60.

It’s interesting that the styling is similar to electric cars created on a common platform with the Toyota bZ3X, but the GS4 itself remains a traditional model with a gasoline engine. This reflects the current trend, in which even cars with internal combustion engines are getting an “electric” design.

Dimensions and space

The dimensions of the crossover have changed slightly. The new product reaches 4680 mm in length, 1860 mm in width and 1675 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2770 mm. Compared to the current version presented in Russia, the car has become a little more compact in some respects, but has an increased wheelbase.

The main increase in space occurred in the second row of seats: the legroom for passengers has been increased, which makes the model more comfortable for family use. Photos of the interior have not yet been published, but an update to the multimedia system and finishing materials is expected.

Technology without revolution

Despite the updated appearance, the technical part remains traditional. The crossover is equipped with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine producing 177 hp. Details about the transmission and drive type for the new version have not yet been specified.

This approach allows you to keep the cost of the model at a competitive level, which is especially important in the mass segment.

Prices and prospects

The current GS4 is sold in China at a price of 115.8 thousand yuan, and the updated version, according to preliminary data, will not receive a significant increase in price. This makes the model an attractive alternative to domestic competitors.

In Russia, the current GS4 costs significantly more: from 3.3 million rubles for the front-wheel drive version and up to 3.9 million rubles for the all-wheel drive version. It is not yet clear whether the updated version will appear on the Russian market and how its price positioning will change.

Context: GAC plans in Russia

In parallel, GAC is preparing new models to enter the Russian market. One of the upcoming premieres will be a large hybrid crossover S9, equipped with a power plant with a 1.5-liter engine and two electric motors with a total power of about 500 hp.

Against this backdrop, the GS4 update looks like an important step to maintain interest in the brand's core model, which plays a key role in generating sales and brand awareness.
