Electric car revolution: how China became the leader in the world production of electric cars

Over the course of a decade, China has transformed from a manufacturer of budget copies into a global leader in the electric vehicle industry.

Until quite recently, Chinese cars were perceived as budget copies of Western prototypes - simple and devoid of individuality. However, over the past ten years, China has made a real technological breakthrough, becoming a leader in the automotive industry - and especially in the field of electric vehicles. Today, the Middle Kingdom not only produces more electric cars than any other country, but also sets global trends in design, autonomy, safety and intelligent control.

Thanks to government support and a huge market - more than 1.4 billion people, of whom hundreds of millions have just begun to use personal transport - tech giants have quickly risen in China. Among them, the most notable are BYD (Build Your Dreams), originally engaged in the production of batteries. Today, BYD is the world's leading manufacturer of electric vehicles and one of the leaders in battery development. Its Blade Battery technology, based on lithium iron phosphate chemistry, has become a safety standard: such batteries do not ignite even if mechanically damaged. In 2023, BYD overtook Tesla in sales of electric vehicles - and this is symbolic: leadership has passed from an American startup to a Chinese industrial giant.

But BYD is just the tip of the Iceberg. In the wake of the trend, dozens of new brands have appeared in China, many of which are not just automakers, but full-fledged technology companies. NIO , XPeng , Li Auto , Zeekr - their cars are equipped with advanced autopilot batteries, next-generation voice assistants, artificial intelligence screens and the latest software updates. NIO, for example, has proposed a revolutionary development - rapid battery replacement, in which the driver can “refill” a new battery in three minutes. This solution circumvents the main problem of electric vehicles - long charging times - and is already being actively promoted in China and Europe.
