The Geely EX5 EM-i hybrid crossover set a record in Australia, driving 1,608 km on one tank of fuel without recharging.
The Chinese auto industry has once again surprised the world - this time not with power or design, but with outstanding efficiency. The Geely EX5 EM-i hybrid crossover set a new record in Australia for range among compact SUVs with a hybrid powertrain: a range of 1,608 kilometers without a single charge or refueling on one tank of fuel.
The feat was accomplished as part of an official test organized by the Australian division of Geely together with independent engineers. The route was along Queensland highways and secondary roads - at an average speed of 87 km/h, with two passengers on board and the air conditioning on. At the same time, the car did not use external charging: the EX5 EM-i traveled the entire journey in hybrid mode, relying on a 1.5-liter turbo engine and a compact traction battery with a capacity of 16.7 kWh.
The basis for success was the Geely EM-i platform, which combines an advanced parallel-serial hybrid drive and an intelligent energy management system. Unlike many competitors, the EX5 EM-i can seamlessly switch between electric, regenerative and co-drive modes, minimizing losses and keeping the engine in the zone of maximum efficiency. As a result, the average fuel consumption was only 2.4 l/100 km - a figure previously considered unattainable for a crossover weighing almost 1.9 tons.
EX5 EM-i is more than just a technology demo. This is a production model, already available in China, with a CLTC range of up to 1,200 km, a price starting from 180,000 yuan (~1.6 million rubles) and a full range of active safety systems. The Australian record became a powerful argument in favor of its imminent entry into international markets, including Europe and Southeast Asia.
Thus, Geely does not just compete with Toyota, BYD or Hyundai in the hybrid segment - it sets new benchmarks. And if previously the “Chinese car” was associated with compromises, today, as the EX5 EM-i proves, it can be a measure of efficiency, reliability and range.
