The updated Tank 700 hybrid was released in China and turned out to be not as powerful as expected

The updated hybrid Tank 700 entered the Chinese market in Hi4‑Z and Hi4‑T versions: instead of the expected almost 1000 horsepower, buyers received a maximum of 524 hp, but at the same time - a serious electric range, a modified design and a modernized interior.

Hybrid Tank 700: expectations versus power reality

In China, orders are open for the updated hybrid SUVs Tank 700 Hi4‑Z and Hi4‑T, which have become the next milestone for Chinese light-frame SUVs. Previously, there were rumors that the top version would receive a power plant of almost 972 hp, and it was these figures that were actively discussed as “almost a thousand-horsepower Tank.” However, in the series, the forecasts did not come true: a hybrid is presented on the market, which maximum total output is 524 hp - impressive, but far from the conventional “thousand”.

The price range for the updated hybrid Tank 700 is from 438 to 518 thousand yuan, which is equivalent to approximately 5.14–6.08 million rubles at the current exchange rate. Thus, the model is consolidated in the upper price segment of Chinese SUVs, offering buyers not record horsepower, but acombination of power, range and premium equipment.

Hi4‑Z and Hi4‑T: two different hybrid philosophies

The Hi4-Z version received a 2.0-liter turbo engine with a power of 252 hp, operating as part of a plug-in hybrid circuit with a large traction battery. The battery capacity is 59 kWh, and it allows you to travel up to 190 kilometers on electric power without starting the internal combustion engine on the WLTC cycle - a serious indicator for a heavy frame SUV. This modification is designed for those who want maximum “pure” electric traction and often drive around the city or on suburban routes.

The Hi4‑T modification, on the contrary, relies on a more traditional Tank power scheme: under the hood there is a V6 3.0 with turbocharging, and the hybrid system brings total power to the level of 524 hp. In driving mode only on electric power, such a Tank 700 Hi4-T is capable of covering up to 90 kilometers, which is less than the Hi4‑Z, but quite enough for everyday city use. In essence, Hi4‑Z is a long-range electric hybrid, and Hi4‑T is a power variant with V6, focused on dynamics and traction.

Design and dimensions: update without character revision

In the current Chinese specification, the Tank 700 retains its impressive dimensions: length 5105 mm, width 2061 mm, height 1985 mm, and a wheelbase of 3000 mm. This is still a large frame SUV with a pronounced expeditionary image, but restyling has brought noticeable touches. The model received a changed hood and a new front bumper, which emphasize the massiveness of the front end and slightly refresh the corporate style.

The list of external modifications also includes 21‑inch wheels of an exclusive design, the addition of an element stylized as a diffuser to the rear bumper, and a small wing above the fifth door. All this does not change the overall brutality of the Tank 700, but makes the silhouette more dynamic and emphasizes that this is a new generation hybrid, and not just a slightly updated version of the previous SUV.

Interior: familiar architecture, new central tunnel

The interior architecture of the Tank 700 generally remains the same: a frame base, a high seating position and a massive front panel with large screens. However, the central tunnel has been completely redesigned - and this is one of the key differences of the update. It lost the usual mechanical transmission selector, the location of the physical switches changed, and new cup holders and organizers appeared, which improved ergonomics.

The digital component is also impressive: the diagonal of the virtual instrument panel is 12.3 inches, the central screen of the multimedia system measures 15.6 inches, and for rear passengers there is a overhead monitor of 17.3 inches plus a touch comfort control panel. Taken together, the interior remains at the level of a premium Chinese SUV, offering second-row passengers not only space, but also a wide range of multimedia and comfort functions.

What does “not as powerful as expected” mean for the market

The fact that the updated hybrid Tank 700 in the serial versions Hi4‑Z and Hi4‑T produces not 972, but a maximum of 524 hp speaks of the pragmatic approach of the developers: the bet is placed not on “marketing” numbers, but on the balance of power, reliability and power reserve. At the same time, both hybrid systems offer serious electric traction, solid total torque and the possibility of real fuel economy for a large frame SUV.

For the segment of Chinese passenger SUVs this is an important signal: manufacturers are leaving the “horses for the sake of horses” race and are beginning to more actively combine hybrid technologies, comfort and a premium level of finishing. The updated Tank 700 shows that even “not as powerful as expected,” a hybrid can remain a desirable product - especially if it offers up to 190 km on electric power, a modern interior and striking design at a price similar to other flagship frame models from China.
