Polestar will release a line of charged electric cars to compete with BMW M

Polestar, a brand managed by China's Geely, is launching a line of charged Polestar Performance electric cars to compete with BMW M and Mercedes-AMG. The first will be the Polestar 4+ (610 hp, acceleration to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds) with a power reserve of 520–560 km.

When electric cars become sports cars

The Swedish-Chinese brand Polestar, known for its minimalistic and technologically advanced electric cars, announced the launch of a new sub-series Polestar Performance - a line of “charged” versions of its models, created to directly compete with the legendary BMW M, Mercedes-AMG and Audi RS. Despite its Scandinavian image, Polestar is a joint venture between Volvo and China's Geely, and all its cars are developed and produced with the participation of Chinese engineering centers and factories.

Technologies from China for global sports

The first model in the new line will be the Polestar 4+, which is scheduled to premiere at the end of 2025. Under the hood is an updated power plant with two electric motors with a total power of 610 hp, acceleration to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and an adaptive suspension with adjustable shock absorbers, developed jointly with Öhlins. Particular attention is paid to handling: thanks to torque vectoring technology and a low alignment (the battery is located low in the floor), the car exhibits behavior close to a rear-wheel drive sports car.

All components - from traction motors to the cooling system - have been refined at test sites in China and Germany. At the same time, the dynamics control software is created in Shanghai, where Geely has one of the largest R&D centers for electric mobility.

Design without compromise

Externally, the “charged” Polestar will receive aggressive carbon fiber body kits, larger air intakes, 21-inch wheels with high-performance tires and a signature red accent stripe on the brake calipers. Inside, there are sports seats with enhanced lateral support, Alcantara, carbon fiber and a stripped-down multimedia system with priority on driving dynamics data.

Interestingly, unlike traditional hot versions, Polestar Performance will maintain a range of 520–560 km (WLTP), without sacrificing practicality for speed.

Challenge to German premium

Prices for the new models will start from 75,000 euros in Europe, which puts them in the same price range as the BMW i4 M50 and Tesla Model 3 Performance. In Russia, the release of the line is possible as early as 2026, subject to stabilization of logistics.

Thus, Polestar, drawing on the resources of China's Geely, is making a bold bet: electric cars can be not only environmentally friendly, but also emotional. And if previously “charged” EVs were perceived as a compromise, now they are becoming real rivals to the legendary ICE sports cars - with the advantage of instant torque, low center of gravity and digital precision.
